I-Café Pilipinas Meets New CICT Head

I-Café Pilipinas represented by its Chairman Edgardo C. Zafra and PRO Arthur Gimena met with the new Chairman of Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), Atty. Ivan John Uy. The courtesy call happened during the break in the Strategic Communication Planning Workshop for Philippine Community eCenter Program attended by the I-Café Pilipinas representatives last on August 11, 2010 at the Innovative Solutions Laboratory, CICT-NCC Building in Diliman, Quezon City. The short meeting was cordial and meaningful in terms of possible collaboration between CICT and I-Café Pilipinas regarding the participation of Internet cafés in the Community eCenter (CeC) program of the government.

I-Café Pilipinas as the national advocacy body for the Internet café industry in the country is recognized by CICT and a Memorandum of Agreement (MoU) was signed between them in a ceremony held at the CICT-NCC Building in Diliman, Quezon City last June 18, 2010. The MoU contains the understanding between CICT and I-Café Pilipinas where the Internet cafés open to the concept of integrating the CeC ideals and services as part of their business social responsibility and contribution for community development would be considered as candidate partners in the Philippine CeC Program under the component for “Transformation of I-Cafes and High School Laboratories to CeCs”.

In the meeting, I-Café Pilipinas expressed its full support to the new CICT Chairman especially on the agency's programs on increased connectivity for the people at affordable cost. It is along this objective that I-Café Pilipinas initiated the proposal for CICT to consider the inclusion of deserving Internet cafés into its "One CeC for Each Municipality" program.
